IPL 2022: Format and Scheduling

The Buzz and Crazy for the upcoming Indian Premier League started from the inception of 2 new teams itself back in 2021. Lucknow and Gujarat were added into the IPL. Now IPL has become a 10 team affair.

IPL Mega Auction took place in 2nd Week of February and all teams now are shaped up and ready to go. Many teams will start putting out their respective pre ipl camps for their players to practice.

Next Challenge before the BCCI was the venue and format of the IPL. Since 2 new teams have been added it was obvious that the IPL will go through a format change and the duration of the league will extend.

Now after yesterday's IPL governing Council Meet, the official statement is out, this upcoming season of Indian Premier League will be conducted in the State of Maharashtra in the cities of Mumbai and Pune.

Mumbai has 3 grounds: Wankhede, CCI Brabourne and DY Patil stadium while Pune has one ground, the MCA Stadium. City of Mumbai will host 55 matches while Pune will host 15 matches.

Among 55 matches, 20 will be conducted on Wankhede while 20 on DY Patil stadium and remaining 15 in Brabourne.

Now coming to the format this year since there are 10 teams there is change in format. All 10 teams are divided into 2 groups of 5 each and placed in order on the basis of championship won and how many finals teams played.

So, Group A consists of MI KKR RR DC and Lucknow while Group B consists of CSK SRH RCB Punjab and Gujarat. Format is each team will play 2 matches against teams in their group and 2 matches against teams placed on the same column in the opposite group and 1match against the remaining 4 teams of the opposite group. In total each team will play 14 matches and top 4 teams will qualify for playoffs.

Now coming to the scheduling IPL governing council meet again and my first week of march IPL 2022 Schedule will be announced.
