Joe Root quits England Test Captaincy
This morning shocking news came in. England Test Match Captain Joe Root announced that he will be resigning from England Red ball captaincy. Root has been England captain for five years and has presided over more games (64), victories (27) and defeats (26) than any previous captain. His team, on the other hand, has only won one of their last 17 Test matches, putting his job in jeopardy. Despite England's 1-0 loss to the West Indies in Grenada, Root stated that he was "extremely passionate about taking this moment forward" and that his players had made "huge progress" and played "great cricket" in the series.
I've decided to step down as England's men's Test captain after returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to ponder "Root remarked. "It's been the most difficult decision I've had to make in my career, but after consulting with my family and those closest to me, I'm confident that the time is right. I am incredibly proud to have led my country and will cherish the memories of the past five years. This has been an honour to do the job and be a custodian of English cricket's apex. I had enjoyed leading my country, but it has just become clear how much it has cost me and my family.
Root's resignation comes at a time of huge upheaval in English cricket, with a power vacuum at the ECB following England's series defeats in the Ashes and against West Indies: the men's team has no managing director, no head coach, no selector and no Test captain.
